CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
Chicago police shot at three burglars who were trying to get away early Monday morning, killing one suspect and wounding the other two.
Police said that they got a call of a burglary in progress from inside Mike's Electronics at 25th and Western around 2:40 a.m.
When officers arrived, Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said officers saw the men inside the building. Officers surrounded the building, knocked on the glass and told them they were surrounded and to come out with their hands up.
The three men instead got in the owner's car and began ramming a garage door to get out onto 25th Street, Camden said. They broke through the door, hit an officer and a squad car and were driving toward several other squad cars when police opened fire.
"The offenders were given ample opportunity to come out and surrender. Instead they wanted to use the vehicle as a battering ram," said Pat Camden of the Fraternal Order of Police.
One person was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and another was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, Fire Media Affairs spokesman Kevin MacGregor said. He said both were trauma patients.
Two men were wounded and taken to area hospitals and one man was dead on the scene, according to the statement. The officer hit by the car was treated and released at Mount Sinai Hospital.
"They had the opportunity to give up and they decided they wanted to be like they were in the movies and bust through a garage door and get away," Camden said.
"Proceeds" from the burglary were also found in the car, police said.
The Cook County Medical Examiner's office confirmed the fatality, but did not immediately have additional details.
An Independent Police Review Authority spokeswoman said IPRA was investigating a police-involved shooting, but could not provide further information early Monday.
