Research technologist for the Northwestern Molecular Biosciences department to assist in efforts to determine protein structure with the technique of X-ray crystallography.
Specific Responsibilities: Follows detailed technical instructions in setting up and conducting standard experiments, including expression and FPLC purification of proteins, analysis of proteins by gel electrophoresis and growing crystals of purified proteins;
Maintains detailed records of results. May enter data into computer for further statistical analyses. Manipulates resulting data and presents it in a variety of ways;
Performs general laboratory maintenance tasks and inventories laboratory supplies, ordering routine supplies as necessary;
Performs related duties as required or assign.
Minimum Qualifications: B.A. or B.S. degree in Biology, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Biophysics or recognized equivalent discipline or the equivalent combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired;
2 years experience in a protein wet lab;
Proficiency in the following skill areas: DNA, RNA, Protein isolation, purification & expression. Southern, Northern, Western blotting. PCR, RT-PCR. Plasmid preparation. Cloning, mapping & sequencing of DNA. Recombinant virus production & purification; Good math, verbal, written and computers skills along with a willingness to learn and succeed.
