CPS Gets $500K in Grants for Chinese Studies

Fresh off a visit to China, Mayor Richard Daley touted nearly $500,000 the Chicago Public Schools are getting in grants from private companies and the federal government to benefit Chinese study and announced his plans after he leaves office next month to get more kids to go to China to study.

At a news conference on Monday, Daley talked about how he and a delegation of Chicago business leaders went to China in the hopes of improving the profile of Chicago and spur more Chinese investment in the city.

Daley also said he's been named co-chair of President Barack Obama's initiative called "100,000 Strong." It's a program designed to get more American students to study in China.

Daley's trip was part of a years-long effort to increase Chinese investment in Chicago.
