Theatrical Teacher Gets Students 'Energized about Learning'

Posted:

Teachers are at the center of the storm as this whole nation tries to rescue our kids from failing public schools.

Here in Illinois, brand new laws make it easier to replace bad teachers. But underperforming teachers make up a very small percentage of working educators.

Most teachers are going at it with talent and passion. FOX Chicago featured one who reaches her students with a bit more drama than most.

Deborah Kimball Crosslin has been a classroom teacher for 36 years. For the last six years, she has been a resource teacher for special education at Mae Jemison School in Hazel Crest.

At Mae Jemison, all of the students get to enjoy her theatrics when she reads the book of the month over the p.a. system.

The kids all describe Ms. Crosslin as "fun," not just her third graders.

“I'll do anything, we roll on the floor, we put letters on the floor we do the stomp,” Crosslin said. “Any kind of different thing that will make them learn and feel good about the experience.”

Her colleagues said the amazing part is she's not just fun. She draws a strict line on discipline which the kids respect - the theatrics are a means to an end.

"My passion has been truly finding different ways to get them energized about learning,” Crosslin said.
