CPS Chief Jean-Claude Brizard, Mayor Rahm Emanuel Announce $77 Million in Cuts from CPS Budget

Chicago Public Schools CEO Jean-Claude Brizard and Mayor Rahm Emanuel announced cuts to the CPS budget Thursday morning at South Loop Elementary downtown.

Emanuel and Brizard announced they were cutting $77 million from the CPS budget by making cuts at the district’s central office.

Emanuel said the bureaucracy was the first line where they looked for savings and cuts, and that the administration would try to preserve resources to the classroom.

Part of the savings will come from limited layoffs, longer school bus routes and reduced custodial services.

The overall CPS budget is $5.2 billion and there is currently a $720 million deficit.

Brizard said Wednesday on Good Day Chicago that he'd be rolling out his new plan for schools in the next day or two.

The schools chief kicked off his "listening tour" Wednesday with a meeting at Malcom X College with several parent action committees. It was a private meeting and reporters were only allowed in for a few minutes.

Attendees of that meeting told Brizard that any parent-schools partnership that Mayor Emanuel is pushing must go beyond academics.
