School Chiefs Worried About 'Draconian' Budget Cuts

Posted:

The heads of the state's two largest school districts are looking even closer at the governor's proposed budget, and they are not happy.

CPS CEO Ron Huberman and Elgin-area schools chief Jose Torres held a news conference urging lawmakers to reject that proposed 2011 budget, which would cut $1.3 billion in education funding.

The two men said cutting opportunities in education now will lead to increased welfare and prison costs later.

"The cuts in Chicago and cuts in Elgin will cause thousands and thousands of teachers to be laid off; it puts our kids behind in dramatic ways. I would call these cuts draconian,” Huberman said.

Huberman said he will lay out the details inside the proposed state budget on Friday, including exactly how many teachers would be laid off, and what education programs would be scaled back or eliminated.
