Parents Try to Spend Less on More School Supplies

Stores are sure to be busy the next few days as parents continue their back-to-school-shopping.

Lists are much longer this year, and parents must be ready to spend. Paper goods and cleaning supplies for classrooms are on these lists, and supplies cost a bit more in general.

Parents are actively looking for deals. They are turning away from name brands, preferring store brands that cost a significant amount less. There are even reports of grandparents helping out with school supply costs.

Parents are also finding ways to spread out their purchases over time instead of spending all at once, such as taking advantage of layaway services.

Store like Kmart place their supply displays at the front of their stores, to catch parents’ attention right away so that they do not have to spend too much time shopping.

Store manager Olu Balogun said the economy is definitely driving purchases, and that every dollar counts to his customers.

One of the best deals at Kmart is a 24 pack of Crayola crayons for 25 cents.
