We need to honor those public servants who risk their lives everyday to keep our streets safe and try to make things better for all of us. I’m talking about Chicago’s finest.
Three police officers have been murdered here since May – Officers Michael Bailey, Thor Soderberg and Thomas Wortham.
One common thread that all of these men shared – an extraordinary commitment to the South Side neighborhoods.
They mentored young people of all colors in their off-hours and helped rehab rundown Park district facilities.
Like millions of our fellow citizens, they refused to believe that one of America’s great cities is fated to inevitable decline.
Most importantly they stood up to the vicious thugs who would bully and rob the rest of us.
They paid the ultimate price “To Serve and Protect” all of us.
Think about these men the next time you have a frustrating encounter with the police – instead of showing a lack of respect and getting hot – perhaps you could say –"Sorry for your loss and thanks for the service."
At the end of the day Illinois and Policemen like the caliber of Bailey, Soderberg and Wortham deserve better.
