People Donate Generously at Union Station for One City, One Food Drive

Posted:

The Greater Chicago Food Depository and FOX Chicago have teamed up for the One City, One Food Drive campaign to help collect millions of pounds of food to help those who are less fortunate.

Volunteers from the Greater Chicago Food Depository were at Union Station Tuesday morning, busy collecting donations from commuters.

They handed out grocery bags during the Monday afternoon commute as people were going home and asked people to fill up the bags as much as they could and bring them back Tuesday.

Many generous people acted on that request. Over 5,000 lbs were donated Tuesday morning.

The need has never been greater, up 35 percent over the last several years, and many of those in need are children.

Jeri Scully-Walker said she donates because she has a job in this tough economy and is grateful she does.

"I just feel that I have an obligation to do something. I am lucky enough to have a job and many other people do not," Scully-Walker said.

By some estimates, more than 50 percent of Illinois residents live paycheck to paycheck.
