Classes will be canceled and offices closed on DePaul University's Loop campus during the G-8/NATO summits in May, and Cook County officials are considering closing courts for the duration as well.
DePaul will not hold regular classes in the Loop from Friday, May 18, through Monday, May 21, according to the school's website. The Loop Campus is scheduled to reopen and resume regular classes on May 22.
Additionally, there will be no access to classrooms, labs, the cafeteria and offices in the Loop campus on those four days. University services will be available to students on the Lincoln Park campus, as well as by phone and Internet.
Loop campus instructors may take their classes online or relocate to the Lincoln Park Campus, or reschedule classes, according to the university.
DePaul employees normally scheduled to work in the Loop on those days will receive normal pay, and may work from home or the Lincoln Park campus.
Regular class schedules will continue at the Lincoln Park, O'Hare and suburban campuses.
Officials in Cook County are thinking about closing the civil courts at Chicago's Daley Center for security reasons as well.
A spokesman for the Cook County Sheriff's Department said closing the courtrooms would be a smart move to keep jurors, judges and others with court business safe. Department spokesman Frank Bilecki said the protests also could have an impact on transportation, making it difficult to get to the Daley Center.
The Chicago Sun-Times reported that Chief Cook County Judge Tim Evans says no final decision on closing the courts has been made.
Protesters have applied for a permit to hold a massive march on May 19 from the Daley Center to McCormick Place, where world leaders will be meeting May 19-21.
