Receiving a James Beard award is like winning an Oscar for chefs, and Chicago has many representatives among the semifinalists announced Tuesday.
Chicago chefs Carrie Nahabedian of Naha, Paul Kahan of Blackbird, Avec and the Publican and Tony Mantuano of Spiaggia are all up for this year’s biggest award, the award for outstanding chef.
Bistronomic and Next Restaurant are both semifinalists for best new restaurant. Next’s counterpart, The Aviary, and The Violet Hour are both included for outstanding bar program.
Patrick Fahy of Café des Architectes and Mindy Segal of Mindy’s HotChocolate were both semifinalists for outstanding pastry chef.
Tru was the only semifinalist in the outstanding restaurant category, and Spiaggia and Topolobampo were noted for outstanding service.
Dave Beran, of Next, Matthew Kirkley, of L2O, and David Posey, of Blackbird, were all semifinalists for rising star chef of the year.
In the best chef: Great Lakes category, Michael Carlson, of Schwa, Stephanie Izard, of Girl & the Goat, Martial Noguier, of Bistronomic, Chris Nugent, of Goosefoot, Bruce Sherman, of North Pond, Giuseppe Tentori, of GT Fish & Oyster, Paul Virant, of Vie and Andrew Zimmerman, of Sepia, were all semifinalists.
Final nominees will be announced March 19.
