Stranded world traveler Bob Bonifas rescued from Antarctic waters

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Imagine being stranded in the Antarctic for days, not knowing when you will be rescued.

Chicago native Bob Bonifas was on a month long excursion to visit remote places in the world's southern most ocean, when his cruise ship, the Plancius, had an engine failure.

Another ship has just arrived near the port where Bonifas is waiting.

Bonifas joined Good Day Chicago on the phone from the Antarctic, where the rescue ship arrived around 7:15 a.m. his time.

He said his luggage had already been loaded, but his restlessness would not be relieved until 6 days from Wednesday, when the ship docks in Montevideo, Uruguay.

Bonifas has been trying to keep sane on the ship stranded 1,400 miles from land, but since he is the only passenger not retired, his active sensibility did not make it easy.

He has traveled the world, including South Georgia Island, where he encountered a colony of 200,000 penguins.

Bonifas will fly home to Aurora once his ship reaches Uruguay.
