CTU President says negotiations have broken down, Chicago teachers headed for a strike

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago Teachers could be headed for a strike. Both sides confirm they've reached an impasse, after several months of contract talks.

The head of the teachers union said negotiations have broken down. CTU President, Karen Lewis, said the administration has created a hostile environment that has taken the joy out of teaching.

To strike, 75 percent of teachers would have to approve such a drastic move.

The teacher's union said it has conducted surveys and mock votes that indicate 75 percent of their members would favor a strike.

Teachers and parents are still frustrated over the longer school day, which is to start in the next school year. There are still questions about how the longer school day will be funded and how the day would be filled.

Teachers and CPS administrators have agreed to appoint a three-member panel that would hear both sides and give a decision by mid-July. The panel would include one person from CTU, one from CPS and in independent mediator.

The teachers' contract expires on June 30.
