DETROIT (AP) - Andre Benoit scored off an assist from rookie Nathan MacKinnon with 31.4 seconds left in overtime to lift the Colorado Avalanche to a 3-2 win over the Detroit Red Wings last night. MacKinnon has a point in 13 straight games. That breaks Wayne Gretzky's record for an 18-year-old NHL player.
EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Keith Appling scored in double figures for the first time in more than five weeks as No. 22 Michigan State topped No. 24 Iowa 86-76 last night. Appling showed his old aggressiveness before hip and wrist injuries and scored 12 points for the Spartans. Travis Trice was 3 for 4 from 3-point range and had 16 points.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Cyesha Goree scored 18 points as the seventh-seeded Michigan women rolled past No. 10 seed Indiana 82-57 in the opening round of the Big Ten tournament yesterday. The Wolverines will face second-seeded Michigan State in the quarterfinals today. Indiana shot 26 percent from 3-point range and 29 percent from the free-throw line.
DETROIT (AP) - The Detroit Red Wings have retired Nicklas Lidstrom's No. 5 jersey. Lidstrom was honored last night before Detroit hosted the Colorado Avalanche. The storied franchise previously retired Gordie Howe's No. 9, Steve Yzerman's (EYEZ'-er-manz) No. 19, Ted Lindsay's No. 7, Terry Sawchuk's No. 1, Alex Delvecchio's No. 10 and Sid Abel's No. 12.
