DETROIT (AP) - The New York Yankees beat the Detroit Tigers 8-4 last night. Rookie Shane Greene allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings, struck out eight and walked one. The Yankees pulled within 2 1/2 games of Seattle for the second AL wild card. Detroit remained a half-game behind the Mariners. Victor Martinez homered for Detroit.
DETROIT (AP) - Tigers star David Price allowed nine consecutive hits to the New York Yankees in the third inning before being pulled last night. The Yankees scored eight runs in the inning. The Yankees went all the way through their batting order. Each batter added a hit before reliever Blaine Hardy replaced Price and retired the first man he faced.
DETROIT (AP) - Derek Jeter was given two seats from Tiger Stadium during a ceremony before the New York Yankees played Detroit last night. The three-game series will be the retiring shortstop's final appearance in Detroit unless the Tigers and Yankees meet in the playoffs. Jeter went to high school in Michigan at Kalamazoo Central.
CINCINNATI (AP) - There's no incentive for the Colts and the Bengals to play their starters much in the final preseason game. They've done so well that both teams are feeling good about the regular season. But it will be the final time that Indianapolis linebacker Robert Mathis can be with the team. He'll start serving a four-game suspension for violating the NFL's policy on performance-enhancing substances.
