Chicago - Iraq War veteran Tammy Duckworth has picked up an endorsement from the SEIU labor union in her run for U.S. Congress.
The Service Employees International Union in Illinois endorsed the Democrat for the 8th Congressional District race on Monday, citing her as a champion of implementing health care reform for families.
Duckworth was most recently the former Assistant Secretary of Veterans Affairs in the Obama administration, a job she left to run for Congress. She made an unsuccessful bid in 2006 in another district.
Duckworth faces Democrat Raja Krishnamoorthi who narrowly lost the primary for Illinois Comptroller in 2010.
The primary in March 20. The 8th District covers many of Chicago's northwest suburbs including Schaumburg, Elgin and Bloomingdale.
SEIU represents about 170,000 members in Illinois.
