It has been a busy week in Springfield as lawmakers tackle everything from gambling to property taxes. Democratic State Rep Jack Franks joined us from Springfield to talk about his proposal to protect homeowners from soaring property taxes.
The proposal would prevent local governments from raising property taxes if the value of a home goes down.
Franks’ plan would also limit property tax increases to 5 percent unless a larger increase is approved by voters.
A growing number of people have lost their homes or face foreclosure because soaring property taxes have made it difficult for them to make their mortgage payments.
Franks said the bill passed in committee, and will be up for a vote next week in the veto session.
