(NT News) - Some Australian leaders are calling on their neighbors to stop having sex in public.

The pleas come after a Northern Territory school teacher in charge of a bus full of teenagers saw a couple "going at it hell for leather, in the canine style.”

The teacher said his headlights shone into a garden as he pulled out of a parking lot and "fully illuminated" the couple. "When the lights hit them, old mate stopped and looked around at me, squinting,” he said. "A second or two must have passed, then he just got on with it. The headlights didn't seem to put him off at all."

Anne Shepherd, mayor of the town of Katherine in the north of the country, said she had seen people having sex in public "several times." "It's sickening," she said. "Alcohol is involved, of course…They just go at it."

Shepherd said the drunken exhibitionists could be found "all over the Territory."

"It's not just in Katherine," she said. "It's just not so obvious in bigger centers."

There have been a string of high-profile sex-in-public incidents in the Northern Territory this year.

Allyson White angrily denied police allegations in October that she was having oral sex with a man when he crashed on the outskirts of Darwin, the largest city in the territory.

In September, police rushed to what they thought was a violent disturbance in Alice Springs only to find the noise was being made by a couple having sex in an alley.

A few days earlier a couple was caught having sex in a car parked at a gas pump, also known as a “petrol bowser” down under.

They became known as the "Bowser Bonkers."
