(MYFOX NATIONAL) - Alaska Governor and former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin has weighed in on the Miss California gay marriage issue. In a strongly worded statement released Wednesday night, Palin said that "the liberal onslaught of malicious attacks against [Miss California] Carrie Prejean for expressing her opinion is despicable."

In the statement Palin says that she spoke with Prejean and that she "can relate as a liberal target myself. What I find so remarkable is that these politically-motivated attacks fail to show that what Carrie and I believe is also what President Obama and Secretary Clinton believe — marriage is between a man and a woman."

Prejean has gained support for her stance on the issue from conservative groups like Focus on the Family and National Organization for Marriage, which has featured her in an advertisement.

Some have noted the Palin is attempting to maintain a national profile. Palin also announced this week that she is penning her memoir, saying that she wants to be "able to tell [her] story unrestrained and unfiltered."
