Chicago - The video is dark and grainy, but what it shows is unmistakable: a hooded figure pointing a weapon towards a home, followed by the flash of gunfire.
The images were captured by a neighbor’s security camera and turned over to police who said it was instrumental in solving the murder of Francisco Frankie Valencia.
The DePaul University senior was shot and killed early Sunday morning at a Halloween party.
Fellow DePaul student Daisy Camacho was shot in the neck and remains hospitalized in stable condition.
The Cook County States Attorney’s office has now filed murder and attempted murder charges against 19-year-old Narcisco Gatica and 21-year-old Berly Valladares.
Police said Gatica was an uninvited guest who tried to crash a Halloween party, was turned away, and left, vowing revenge.
Gatica became very upset by this perceived slight and went to Valladares' residence and informed him that he needed a gun to shoot someone. Valladares supplied Gatica with a 9mm semi automatic pistol, said Area 5 Detectives Commander Joseph Salemme.
“Gatica fired 4 to 6 shots,” Salemme said. “The gun has been recovered and the suspects have made videotaped confessions; Gatica was identified in a lineup.”
Outside where the shootings happened on Rockwell Street near Wabansia, Ceasefire held an anti-violence vigil and decried the senseless shooting.
“Our community, sadly, has been robbed once again by the violence that plagues our streets,” said 1st Ward Alderman Manny Flores. “It was not just a crime against this individual, it was a crime against all of us.”
Off to the side, Valencia's family lit candles and huddled quietly in the gangway where he was killed, heartbroken, but grateful they said in a written statement, for all the support they've received.
Gatica and Valladares will appear in bond court on Thursday.
