Chicago - The final day of filming in Chicago by the Transformers 3 crew was canceled Thursday after an accident critically injured an extra in the film Wednesday night.
The woman has been identified as Gabriela V. Cedillo, 24, of Chicago. Indiana State Police told the Associated Press that she was in critical condition Thursday.
The action movie was filming on a closed portion of Cline Avenue in Hammond, Ind. around 7 p.m. Wednesday when a stunt went awry.
According to published reports, a cable under tension snapped and shot through the windshield of the Toyota driven by Cedillo.
’It snapped. The cable snapped, and the cable went into the westbound lane where we were at and hit the girl’s car, smashed the windshield. From the way it looked, I don’t know if she was knocked out immediately or not but the car, because we were already going at a high rate of speed, the vehicle just went, it just kept going,’ a witness said, wanting to remain anonymous because of confidentiality agreements.
The car continued moving for about a mile, repeatedly crashing into a concrete barrier as it rolled.
Cedillo was airlifted to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with what was described as "serious injuries" to the head.
The witness said safety was stressed as recently as 10 minutes before the accident, with Director Michael Bay himself giving a speech about it.
A senior member of the production team told FOX Chicago News Thursday's filming had been postponed as a result of the accident.
Thursday was supposed to be the final day of shooting in Chicago by the film, with explosions and low-flying helicopters planned for Millennium Park and Wacker Drive.
