Chicago - The daughter of a schizophrenic woman filed a lawsuit Tuesday, claiming her 42-year-old mother was impregnated at a Near West Side nursing home where she was residing for long-term care.
Felicia Daniels is mentally ill, needs constant care, and now she's 7 months pregnant.
Daniels has lived at the Monroe Pavilion for seven years, but her daughter Tekia Daniels is suing the home, and asking police to find out who got her mother pregnant and whether it was a resident or an employee.
“I hope they bring justice for my mother and this child," said Daniels.
Daniels’ mother was sent to Monroe after she stabbed her stepfather to death and was found not guilty by reason of insanity.
Daniels' attorney, Michael Gravlin, said the home had an obligation to care for Felicia.
"These people cannot fend for themselves, and if they could they would not be in a facility," Gravlin said.
The facility houses 127 residents, and according to most recent state figures 18 of them are felons and two are registered sex offenders.
When Daniels first started gaining weight employees denied she was pregnant. But last month, she was forced to stop taking several anti-psychotic drugs because of danger to the unborn child.
Gravlin said the sudden withdrawal of drugs sent her into a tailspin.
"From what I understand she was on suicide watch because they had to take the meds from her," Gravlin said.
Tekia said she is her mother's legal guardian, and she is determined to care for the baby, even though she has five children of her own, and has another one on the way.
