Chicago - Rod Blagojevich Trial Extended Coverage >>
Chicago - The wait continues for the "holdout" juror to explain herself. She is the lone juror who, on some counts at least, prevented the Blagojevich jury from reaching unanimous verdicts to convict.
Jurors who have been interviewed so far will not identify the juror, other than to say the juror was a female.
FOX Chicago News reported that it is likely to be juror Jo Ann Chiakulas of Willowbrook, after a second-hand acquaintance said that she has been saying since early july that she would find Blagojevich not guilty.
Other jurors are reacting to the result of the case and supporting a retrial.
Juror Ralph Schindler was quick to point out the split on many counts was 11 to one.
"I felt bad because we were given this task, to do the best we could to reach a conclusion, and I felt that we had failed. More than I was personally embarrassed, I would have been embarrassed if I hadn't thought we had done everything we could to reach that point," Schindler said.
Another juror, Cynthia Parker, said she also felt bad that the jury did not accomplish what she felt they set out do, but she puts some blame on prosecutors.
She said during the retrial, they'd be smart to simplify things.
"I’m hoping that it wouldn't be as confusing, not as long. And I’m glad there is going to be [a retrial]. I don't feel it's finished so I recommend that," Parker said.
Chiakulas is a retired director from the Illinois Department of Public Health. She was juror 106, college educated, is active in the Urban League and other politics, and listens to NPR. She reportedly did not see smoking gun in the case and that’s why she didn’t vote to convict.
Contacted Tuesday night, she told FOX Chicago News she would call on Wednesday if she wished to talk about the case.
On one count at least, Chiakulas voted with her fellow jurors, agreeing to convict Blagojevich of lying to federal agents.
