Chicago - A North Side Chicago family got quite a scare when a chunk of ice hit their home .

It happened around 8 p.m. in the 4200 block of North Wolcott.

The family was inside their home watching TV when they suddently heard a loud noise. They discovered a large piece of ice had struck the home. It has many believing the ice came from a passing plane.

Blue ice is the term for frozen material formed by leaks from bathrooms on aircrafts. It is a combination of human waste and liquid disinfectant that freezes at high altitude.

Blue ice is both dangerous to the public below and the aircraft itself. The National Transportation Safety Board has recorded several cases where the ice waste has struck engines during flight. In all cases the aircrafts were able to land safely with the use of the remaining engines not damaged by the ice.
