Portage, Ind. - The I-94 to I-90 west bound ramp will remain closed until further notice as officials determine the structural damage after a semi fell off of it, leaving dozens of pigs wandering on the roadways and killing 29 of them Monday.
Indiana State Police responded to the crash at 11:42 a.m. Monday on westbound I-90 at the 20-mile marker, about 2 1/2-miles west of the Portage Toll, a state police release said.
Truck driver Jakob Konn, 26, of Manitoba, Canada, was exiting the toll road ramp to go east on I-94 when he took the ramp too fast, losing control of the semi as he came around a curve. The semi then fell about 25 feet below onto the I-94 to I-90 west ramp, the release said.
The tractor separated from the trailer and the trailer completely blocked the I-94 to I-90 west bound ramp.
Seventy-nine pigs were on the trailer. While a number of the pigs escaped the overturned trailer, 23 pigs died. Some were seen wandering on the ramp and grassy area which separated the ramp form I-90 westbound traffic, the release said.
The pigs were coming from Manitoba and were going to Bob Evans Farm in Hillsdale, Michigan, the release said.
Konn was taken to Saint Mary's Hospital in Hobart, Ind. with non life threatening injuries.
Police cited Konn for driving too fast to avoid a collision.
Police said animal haulers were routed to the scene to pick up of the surviving animals.
As of Tuesday morning, the I-94 to I-90 west bound ramp will remain closed until further notice as officials determine the structural damage and drivers should use the Portage or the I-65 exits instead, the release said.
