Chicago, Illinois - A man driving a luxury car at a high rate of speed was killed when he plowed into a viaduct and flipped late Sunday on the West Side.
Police responded to a vehicle that struck a viaduct in the 2400 block of West Ogden Avenue at 11:40 p.m. Sunday, according to Chicago police News Affairs Officer Hector Alfaro.
The accident happened near the intersection of Ogden and Western avenues.
The man was driving a Mercedes-Benz C-240 sedan southbound on Western when witnesses said he “took off” at a high rate of speed, lost control and slammed into the viaduct -- leaving him trapped inside the crumpled car, according to police on the scene. The man had no passengers.
An unidentified 31-year-old man was pronounced dead at 1:20 a.m. on the scene at 1332 S. Western Ave., according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Crews from the Chicago Fire Department had to remove the trapped victim from the vehicle that had also flipped, police said.
It was not immediately known whether drugs or alcohol were involved or if the car was registered to the victim.
The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
