Chicago - A Near South Side man has been charged for firing shots from a car and leading police on a chase on the Dan Ryan Expressway that ended in a crash on the South Side early Monday.
Deangelo Atwater, 21, of 2001 S. Michigan Ave., was charged with aggravated fleeing the police, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and also charged with a warrant. He was cited with driving on a suspended license, no insurance and failure to stop at a stop sign, according to police.
The charges were approved at 8:16 a.m. Monday and Atwater was arrested at 2 a.m. at 27 W. 83rd St., police said.
At 1:45 a.m., Targeted Response Unit officers were in the 5100 block of South Union Avenue on a routine patrol when they heard shots fired from a car, according to a statement from Chicago police News Affairs.
Police early Tuesday said Atwater was driving a purple 1995 Buick Rivera.
The car from which the shots were fired fled the scene and the officers pursued it onto the Dan Ryan Expressway. The car exited at West 79th Street and it crashed in the 7900 block of South Lafayette. Four people were initially arrested and taken to Saint Bernard Hospital and Health Care Center with minor injuries, the statement said.
Information about whether the other three suspects were charged with anything was not available early Tuesday.
A weapon was also recovered. No officers were injured, Alfaro said.
Wentworth Area detectives are investigating.
