Chicago - State officials agree Metra needs a watchdog following the Phil Pagano scandal, but who appoints someone to oversee the transit agency is another question.

A legislative hearing looking into Pagano's abuse of authority and improper vacation pay was held Wednesday.

Some state lawmakers want an inspector general appointed with the consent of the State Senate.

Metra's chairwoman told the committee that the agency has taken corrective action and is working to hire a permanent inspector general.

Pagano committed suicide after it was revealed he took nearly $500,000 of vacation pay improperly.
