There's new drama in the Illinois governor's race and it's within the same political party.
Andy McKenna is joining the crowded Republican field.
McKenna stepped down as state Republican party chair back in August. He announced his plans for candidacy today.
His announcement is irksome to some Republicans who say McKenna was misleading when he stepped down from his party post, indicating he wouldn’t run for governor.
According to the Daily Herard, McKenna commissioned internal party polls to see how he would fare in the governor and senate races, even as he served as party chair.
A spokesman said McKenna always intended to step back in order to weigh his options.
With McKenna in the race, there are now seven Republican gubernatorial candidates in the contest.
