Chicago - City Council members delivered a round of applause for Chicago Mayor Richard Daley at a meeting Wednesday, the day after his big announcement to not seek re-election.
Aldermen lined up before the meeting to honor the mayor.
The mayor indicated he does not intend to spend the next eight months relaxing, and took some time at the microphone calling for someone to come forward to help solve the unsolved murder of Officer Michael Bailey , who used to guard Daley’s home.
’Most importantly, we should be outraged that no one has come forward in order to solve this case. It’s the community that stands up and not the politicians and not the police department. You must come forward to solve this case on the South Side of Chicago. No one else to blame,’ Daley said.
Daley said he plans to keep working very hard for the next eight months.
Many members of City Council have been floated as possible candidates for the next mayor, as have a number of big name Illinois politicians, including Rahm Emanuel, Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr., Attorney General Lisa Madigan and Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart.
Candidates must file 12,500 signatures by Nov. 22 to get on the ballot.
