Chicago - Army Specialist Frank Pierson got the red carpet treatment this Memorial Day -- he and his wife went out for burgers and then off to the Blackhawks game, escorted by Governor Pat Quinn.
Spc. Pierson is a native of Plainfield who lost both of his legs during his first deployment to Baghdad last year. On Monday night, he and his wife Arielle had dinner at the Billy Goat Tavern with Quinn, then went to the game.
"I think the people of Illinois are proud of the Blackhawks, but they are even prouder on this memorial day of Frank Pierson and his wife and all service members who answer the call to duty," said Quinn.
Spc. Pierson has a message for his fellow servicemen and women who are in harm's way around the world, as he enjoys the Blackhawks game.
"It's just a big thanks to people I serve with and people who want to serve later on," he said.
Governor Quinn said the Blackhawks did help get access to the tickets for Monday's Stanley Cup game, but he paid for them out of his own pocket. At $250/ticket, he says it was money well spent.
"I think it's important that we find ways in Illinois every day to make it Memorial Day to help our veterans, service members and their families," he said. "And I think one way to do that is to enjoy sports."
