Chicago - A bright orange coat a suspect was wearing helped police link the suspect to four separate strong armed robberies in the Rogers Park neighborhood on the North Side Tuesday night.
The 37-year-old man has not been formally charged as of 4:30 a.m. but is in custody at a local hospital where he was taken for treatment and observation after officers saw him swallowing a large amount of drugs while in custody at the Rogers Park District police station, according to Rogers Park District police Lt. John Franklin.
The suspect is from the Rogers Park neighborhood and is suspected in four strong-armed robberies that occurred Tuesday ninth in the same general area, at 1310 W. Lunt, 6700 N. Glenwood Ave., 6647 N. Newgard Ave. and 7020 N. Ashland Ave., according to the lieutenant.
After all four, he only got away with $2 and all victims positively identified him in part by the “bright orange coat” he was wearing, according to Franklin.
Prior to his arrest, officers were flagged down by a man who described the suspect as the person who followed his wife up to her door and tried to steal her purse. She was able to get inside and tell her husband, Franklin said.
Officers saw a man matching his description and saw him flee and jump a fence. Officers gave chase and were able to arrest him in the 1500 block of West Lunt Avenue, he said.
No one was injured during any of the attacks and a gun was not displayed, according to the lieutenant.
Belmont Area detectives are investigating.
