Chicago - Across the country, many remember the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Young basketball players from all over the city did so in their own way on Monday at Whitney Young High School, by participating in the 11th annual MLK Dream Classic.
Marshall High School legendary coach Dorothy Gaters joined Good Day Chicago, and said the basketball shoot-out was created to teach Dr. King’s message through wholesome competition.
“I think our young people need to be reminded, constantly, of the sacrifices that were made so that they would have to opportunity to go to the schools that the go to, to have more job opportunities, in housing,” Gaters said, “More opportunities in every facet of their lives.”
Dr. King’s message will be played all day over the school’s PA system, to remind kids of how his message can be put into action.
Some of the best young players in the city gather for this shoot-out competition, with 65 teams in total.
Tickets for the event are still available, and the schedule is posted on the MLK Dream Classic website .
