Chicago - Blame this one on the Grinch.
For the first time since 1955, Chicago’s cutting down its Christmas tree – which last year rose to a towering 90 feet and was made of 113 little trees – to a smaller, 56-foot tall single tree.
The smaller tree was donated by a Palos Heights family and is expected to save the city a bundle, according to the Sun-Times. Last year’s tree cost in the low six figures, with this year’s spruce expected to cost about half that.
The city will spend less time constructing the tree and will decorate the tourism draw with 7,000 energy-saving LED lights donated by Underwriters Laboratories.
