Southbound lanes of the Bishop Ford near south suburban Dolton will be closed for about eight hours as crews work to clean up 45,000 pounds of corrosive materials leaked by a tanker truck Wednesday morning.

Police were notified about 6:30 a.m. of a semi truck leaking a corrosive liquid in the southbound lanes of the Bishop Ford Freeway (I-94) near Dolton Road in Dolton, according to an Illinois State Police District Chicago Trooper.

The truck did not crash and was stopped just south of a bridge, the trooper said.

Illinois State Police, the Illinois Dept. of Transportation and Dolton police and fire departments continue to handle the hazardous materials spill involving a tanker hauling 45,000 pounds of mild corrosive on southbound I-94 (Bishop Ford) at Dolton Ave. in Dolton, according to an Illinois State Police release.

The spill — which does not present a health hazard — has prompted the closure of I-94 south from 130th Street to Dolton Avenue for about 8 hours as crews work to clean up the spill, the release said.

Drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes including I-90 and Torrence Avenue to the east or I-57 and Halsted Street to the west. The northbound lanes of the I-94 are not affected and will remain open, the releases said.
