Chicago - Carlos Rubio, the man accused of fleeing the scene after his van struck and dragged an 11-year-old girl who died less than an hour after the South Side crash Tuesday night, was charged with a felony on Thursday.
Rubio, 67, of the 2300 block of West 18th Place, was charged with one count of leaving the scene of accident causing injury and death, according to police.
The crash happened at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday in the 2500 block of East 79th Street, according to a South Chicago District police sergeant.
Itali Hinton of 3939 S. Lake Park Ave. was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m. at University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital fof injuries suffered in the crash, according to a spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office.
No one else was hurt, the sergeant said.
The 1993 Chevrolet van was eastbound on 79th when it struck Itali, who was crossing the street at the corner of 79th and Colfax, according to the sergeant.
She was dragged several feet and suffered a head injury. The driver initially stopped, but a crowd which had seen the crash started converging on the van and he apparently became fearful and drove away, according to the sergeant.
That corner usually has a lot of pedestrians, according to the sergeant.
The van was found in the 1800 block of South Western Avenue at 11:45 p.m. Tuesday. Rubio was arrested about 2 a.m. Wednesday and positively identified as the owner of the van, which sustained damage to its front passenger-side bumper area.
Rubio is schedule for a bond hearing Friday, according to police.
The police Major Accident Investigation Unit is investigating.
