Chicago, Illinois - Chicago Police shot a suspect who fired shots at officers after a botched robbery late Wednesday in the West Side’s Garfield Park community.

About 11:30 p.m., police shot a person at 1 S. Whipple St. after the suspect fired shots at officers, according to police News Affairs Officer Amina Greer, who was citing preliminary information.

A law enforcement source said police shot the person after the suspect was involved in a botched robbery.

The incident began when a Grand Central Area gang enforcement team saw a vehicle with three occupants inside driving erratically near the North Whipple and West Madison streets, according to a police News Affairs statement.

As officers curbed the vehicle, two suspects exited and fled the scene, prompting a short foot pursuit. During the pursuit, one of the suspects allegedly displayed a weapon and fired at an officer, who returned fire and struck the suspect in the leg, according to the statement.

The wounded suspect was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in an unidentified condition. The second person was apprehended nearby without incident, but the third fled in the vehicle, the statement said.

No officers were injured and a weapon was recovered on the scene, Greer said.

Harrison Area detectives and the Independent Police Review Authority are investigating.
