Motorist Cited In Southside Wreck

A motorist has been cited after causing a crash that left three people hurt, including herself and her 16-year-old female passenger late Sunday on the South Side. The crash occurred at 11:04 p.m. at 5900 South Union Ave., according to a release from police News Affairs. A 1999 Buick Century was traveling northbound on Union when its driver, 24-year-old Altona Smith, allegedly disobeyed a red light and struck a 1993 Ford Explorer, which was traveling westbound on 59th Street, according to a release from police News Affairs. Smith was transported in good condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County while her 16-year-old female passenger was taken in good condition to University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital, according to the release. A 43-year-old man driving the SUV was transported in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, according to the release. Smith, of the 6400 block of South Lowe Avenue, was cited for disobeying a red light, driving with a suspended driver’s license, no registration, no insurance and failure to wear a seat belt, according to the release. Smith has a traffic court date of November 17.
