Police say two alleged rival gang members may have shot each other Monday afternoon on the South Side -- leaving one of them possibly paralyzed. At 1:40 p.m., the two were outside in the 7200 block of South Yates Boulevard when they were shot, according to Grand Crossing District police Lt. Timothy Bickham. A 21-year-old man suffered three gunshot wounds to the neck and one each to the head, leg and buttocks, leaving him possibly paralyzed, according to the lieutenant, who said that victim was in critical condition at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Another Grand Crossing District police lieutenant said the 21-year-old was found lying on the street at 7253 S. Yates Blvd. and the other victim, who is 29, was found about a block away at 2346 E. 73rd St.
The older man was taken in an unidentified condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County. He suffered two gunshot wounds to the right thigh and as many as three shots to the left thigh, according to the lieutenant.
Bickham said police are investigating the possibility that the two men may have shot each other. Two different caliber shell casings were found on the scene and the victims are allegedly affiliated with rirval gangs.
Calumet Area detectives are investigating and no charges have been filed as of early Tuesday.
