Fire In Chicago's Old Post Office Put Out

A fire fed by a buildup of debris in the vents of the retired Main Chicago Post Office has been contained Saturday, authorities said.

Emergency crews responded to reports of smoke coming off the roof of the old Main Chicago Post Office, 433 W. Van Buren St., Saturday about noon, according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.

Vents from the Amtrak yard that run up through the post office to the roof had become clogged with "creosol" debris, Langford said.

Creosol refers to a buildup of carbon materials in chimneys from wood-burning fires, according to an online directory.
