Chicago Police arrested and charged a convicted felon with a weapons violation after he fled the scene following a traffic stop early Friday morning in the Lincoln Park neighborhood on the Near North side.

Daryl Howard, 40, of the 4500 block of South Laramie Avenue, was charged with one count of armed habitual criminal, a Class X felony, and a misdemeanor charge for resisting/obstructing a peace officer following a foot chase by officers working a robbery mission, according to a release from Chicago Police.

At 1:19 a.m. in the 2200 block of North Stockton Drive, a Sgt. working the mission initiated a traffic stop and repeatedly asked to see Howard’s driver’s license. Howard refused each request and was asked to step out of his vehicle, the release said.

As he exited the vehicle, Howard locked the driver’s side door and positioned himself between the Sgt. and the car door, the release said. As officers approached Howard in order to take him into custody, he fled the scene.

While running, Howard removed his shirt in an effort to elude capture. With officers pursuing immediately behind, Howard was ordered to stop several times, but refused to comply and became combative, the release said.

The Sgt. then discharged his Taser to secure the arrest. A semi-automatic pistol and miscellaneous law enforcement equipment were recovered on the scene, according to the release.

Howard was treated at a local hospital for minor injuries and subsequently charged, the release said.

Howard is scheduled to appear in court Saturday at Cook County Criminal Court House, 2600 S. California Ave., and Friday, Sept. 25 at North Felony Court, 2452 W. Belmont Ave., the release said. Charges were approved by State’s Attorney’s Giancola.
