Two young children were critically injured Thursday after falling out of windows in two separate incidents on the Northwest Side just over two hours apart, authorities said.

The latest incident happened about 5:30 p.m. in the 3600 block of West Shakespeare Avenue, according to Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor, who said a child was taken in critical condition to Children's Memorial Hospital after falling out of a window.

Police News Affairs Officer JoAnn Taylor said a 2 or 3-year-old boy was hurt in the fall, and the circumstances surrounding the incident were not immediately known.

The first incident happened in the Northwest Side's Irving Park neighborhood about 3 p.m. A 4-year-old boy was critically injured after falling from a second story window of a residence at 4655 N. Kenton Ave., according to Fire Media Affairs Director Larry Langford.

An ambulance took the child to Children’s Memorial Hospital in critical condition, spokesman Quention Curtis said. Albany Park District police are investigating the first incident, Taylor said.
