Chicago, Illinois - One person is reportedly dead and two others were critically injured when a vehicle being pursued by police hit a tree and flipped early Wednesday on the Near West Side, sources said.
A Harrison District police captain said the vehicle was traveling east on the Eisenhower Expressway (I-290) when it exited at South Paulina Street and struck a tree near Paulina and West Congress Parkway about 5 a.m.
Sources said Harrison District police were pursuing the suspicious vehicle prior to the wreck.
Fire Media Affairs Chief Kevin MacGregor said three people were taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County from the rollover crash.
A law enforcement source said one of the people was dead on arrival at the hospital. The Cook County Medical Examiner's office has not been notified of the death as of 5:45 a.m.
The captain said fire personnel had to extricate people from the vehicle.
