An Aurora police officer shot and killed a pit bull Monday morning after it attacked a teen, another dog and finally charged the officer.
According to Aurora Sgt. Marie Blincoe, police were called 7:04 a.m. for a report of a 13-year-old girl who had been bitten by a pit bull that was loose in 400 block of Jackson Street. The girl had been walking to the nearby Waldo Middle School when the dog attacked her and bit her on the back of her left leg, police said. The girl was knocked to the ground, while her friend tried to fight off the dog, police said.
The dog's bite broke the girl's skin; she was taken to Rush-Copley Medical Center. Her condition was not known.
The pit bull also attacked a golden retriever that was being walked on the east side of Jackson Street. The adult pit bull and two smaller pit bulls attacked the retriever, pulling down the dog's owner, police said.
The dog was bitten several times and the owner suffered minor injuries while being pulled to the ground, police said. The condition of the golden retriever is not known.
When officers arrived, the pit bull was still running loose, police said. The dog turned and began to charge at one of the officers, who then shot the animal three times, police said.
Even after being shot, the dog continued to walk toward it's owner's home, police said. The officer shot the dog three more times to keep the animal from injuring anyone else, Blincoe said.
Aurora Animal Control retrieved the body of the pit bull that had been shot, as well as several other animals at the home.
