Chicago - Metra is expanding its Bikes on Trains program. Starting this Saturday, Metra is increasing the maximum number of bikes per train car from three to five, as long as there is room.

The higher limit will be implemented during a one-year trial period, according to Metra spokesman Mike Gillis. The change will be made permanent if Metra decides it's working out.

Metra also has agreed to try allowing cyclists to bring bikes on three lines during one day of the Taste of Chicago, when bikes are normally banned. The Milwaukee North, Union Pacific West and Rock Island lines will allow bikes during the non-rush hours of Monday, June 28.

Other rules of Metra's bike policy remain unchanged, meaning bikes are allowed on weekend trains and on weekday trains arriving in Chicago after 9:30 a.m. and leaving Chicago before 3 p.m. and after 7 p.m.

Bikes aren't allowed if space is needed for passengers with disabilities. Train conductors will decide whether a bike can be in a car.
