Under a new bill on its way to Governor Quinn, all DNA evidence from sex crimes would have to be sent to the state crime lab within 10 days of collecting it.
The lab would have six months to look at it.
Police departments would have to hand over all untested rape kits to the lab and the state police would be responsible for making sure it's analyzed.
A recent Tribune report found DNA evidence from 4,000 cases has not been tested.
