Chicago - A motorist fled on foot after the car they were driving struck and killed a construction worker on Interstate 80 near Lake Station, Ind. early Tuesday.

The man killed, 45-year-old Christopher D. Jenkins of Valparaiso, Ind., was one of two workers who was "cold patching" pot holes in the far two left lanes just west of Ripley Street about 1:28 a.m. when a 1993 Mercury Cougar struck him, according to a release from Indiana State Police.

The Lake County, Ind. Coroner's Office and Jenkins’ family have been notified of his death, according to a follow up release.

All westbound lanes of 1-80 were opened as of 7 a.m., according to an Indiana State trooper.

The worker was thrown into the windshield of the car, partially landing on the driver, who got out of the car and ran south from the scene after the other worker stood in front of the car to prevent him from speeding away, the release said.

Both workers are employed by Walsh Construction out of Gary, Ind., according to the release.

The driver of the Mercury was not located as 6:15 a.m. but construction workers at the scene were able to provide a description, according the state trooper.
