Elgin, Ill. - Elgin School District U46 voted unanimously Monday night to cut 1,100 jobs -- including 732 teachers -- after meeting with parents, students, teachers and administrators to discuss the cuts.

The cuts are an attempt to try and balance a budget that could be as much as $44 million in the hole.

Elgin school officials told the crowd to blame the cuts on the state that isn't paying its bills -- and could cut even more from education under Gov. Quinn’s budget plan.

The Elgin School District isn't the only one in such a tough situation.

  • Morton High School District 201 will be cutting 230 teachers.
  • Plainfield Community Consolidated School District 202 will be wiping out 160 full-time positions.
  • Maine Township High School District 207 in Park Ridge will be eliminating 75 teaching positions and 60 other staff jobs.

Teachers Monday night said they know things will be worse next year, with less staff and less resources.
