Chicago - A South Side drug rehabilitation counselor was formally charged with murder on Monday for allegedly shooting a man trying to sell him narcotics in front of his young children last month.
Elliot G. Mayfield, 51, of the 6000 block of South Calumet was Indicted Monday on six counts of first-degree murder, and arraignment was set for March 26, Cook County State's Attorney's office spokesman Andy Conklin said.
On Feb. 7, Mayfield was with his 11-year-old daughter, a stepdaughter and a friend when he shot Samuel Fullilove at a Woodlawn bus stop, Asst. State’s Atty. Angel Essig said at Mayfield's bond hearing last month.
Mayfield was talking to another man, a former co-worker and client, at the bus stop at 6114 S. Martin Luther King Drive when Fullilove approached and tried to sell him drugs, Essig said.
Mayfield told police Fullilove, 33, started yelling, saying “Breezy did it. He won the Super Bowl. I got nickel rocks. I got nickel blows,” a police report said.
Mayfield, who has a 1990 drug conviction, refused and said, “I don’t do that anymore. I am just trying to make sure that my daughters get home safely,” the police report said.
But Fullilove kept taunting the older man and even swung at Mayfield but didn’t make contact, Essig said.
Fullilove also got into one of “his daughter’s faces,’’ the report said, and Mayfield became angry.
Fullilove even chased Mayfield around as his daughter cried, “Leave my daddy alone.”
Mayfield eventually pulled out a handgun and pointed it at Fullilove’s face, Essig said, but the taunts continued. Mayfield then shot Fullilove in the chest, killing him, Essig said. Mayfield fled with the girls in the car of the former client he had been talking to.
Mayfield called a former girlfriend, telling her “something had happened,” the report said. The woman told Mayfield police had called her and urged him to call detectives.
Mayfield later called authorities to “clear things up” and told them he could be found at 7749 S. Lowe, police said. He also showed officers where he hid the .25 caliber semi-automatic handgun wrapped in a plastic, the police report said.
Fullilove has an extensive criminal history, according to court records.
