Chicago - A 19-year-old student has been hospitalized for a psychiatric evaluation after he climbed onto a fountain in Grant Park and jumped about 7 feet onto the roof of the School of the Art Institute on Friday morning.
Police responded at 8:36 a.m. Friday to a reports of of a 19-year-old man on top of a fountain in the South Garden of Grant Park near 230 S. Columbus Dr., News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli said.
The man ignored orders to come down from the fountain, then made an upward diagonal jump of about 7 feet onto the roof of the School of the Art Institute.
An officer then went onto the roof to talk to the man, keeping him calm before arresting him without incident, Mirabeli said.
The man is a student at the School of the Art Insitute and was on the roof of a low-rise school building, school spokeswoman Elysia Borowy said. The incident happened before sclasses started and there was no property damage.
The fountain is known as The Noguchi Fountain and is about 50 feet long, Borowy said.
The man was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital for psychiatric evaluation and is not expected to face criminal charges, Mirabelli said.
