Chicago - A lot of people want to know how to run for Chicago mayor, now that Richard M. Daley has said he's not going to run for another term. Here's what potential candidates need to know.

  • All candidates are required to live in Chicago for the last calendar year.
  • Candidates must file petitions with at least 12,500 signatures. The people who sign must be at least 18 years old.
  • Candidates cannot be felons, and cannot owe the city any money. This includes parking tickets.
  • The first day to file is November 15. The deadline is a week later, on November 22.
  • There is no primary election in Chicago.
  • The Mayoral election will be on February 22, 2011. The winner must get 50 percent of the vote plus one vote. If no one meets this threshhold, there will be a runoff on April 5, 2011.
  • The new Mayor of Chicago will be sworn in on May 16, 2011.
